The Public Health Society aims to promote health, raise money for health causes and organise educational and social events for members. This society gives committee members and other students a huge scope to demonstrate skills that improve employability. For example:
Organising events, leadership, working in partnership with other organisations, photography, web design and social media, budget management, publicity and marketing, health promotion, fundraising, grant applications… The list really depends on what you choose to do with the society.

To run as a candidate for this year’s committee please nominate yourself by emailing Mausam Avlani (m.j.avlani@gmail.com) with your name and position(s) that you wish to run for by 13th October, Saturday 6.00 pm. Voting will take place the following week. The positions available are:
President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Inclusion Officer, Activities Officer, Web Officer , Alumni Representative, Sports Representative and Academic Representative.

The PHS/ScHARR Ball is our last big event of the year, where ScHARR staff and students will come together before we all move on to new projects. The event includes a 3 course meal, DJ, dancing and other entertainment at the exquisite Mercure St Paul’s Hotel in Sheffield city centre. We have arranged all this for only £20 per ticket. The theme for the evening is Shades Of Blue.

On Wednesday we are showing the multi-award winning documentary Born Into Brothels. This is a moving and thoughtful film about the children of prostitutes in Calcutta, India. It has had great reviews and numerous awards.

The first student-staff football match of the year was a massive defeat for the students, but we have discovered a couple of star players since then. This is our last chance to make up for the previous poor performance so please come along and give us your support.

We are organising some group photos for this year’s ScHARR students, so please come along to Regent’s Court if you’re free. We’ll be wearing our public health hoodies, so if you have one please bring it.

The Millennium Development Goals took a long time to reach international agreement and with their target date of 2015 rapidly approaching, debate is now focusing on what should come next. This seminar looks at how effective the MDGs have been and focuses on the issue of what will follow them.
Henock Taddese will give the presentation: “Millennium Development Goals: Track records and ideas for the post MDG world” with questions and answers, followed by focus group discussions and feedback. With the Public Health Society’s diverse experience, this is a great opportunity to gain an international perspective on what should come next.

Come and check out our PHS stall at the Societies Festival on Tuesday 14th February in the activities and sports zone of the Student Union. There will be over 50 societies showcasing what they do with performances and activities. We’ll be displaying what we’ve been doing over the last semester and what we’ve got lined up for this semester. Hope to see you there!
